Part 1. Time and Desire<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes I don\u2019t go to bed even when I\u2019m tired after a long day at work. The reasonable choice would be to rest and prepare for the next day\u2019s work. However, I spend time watching short videos or scrolling through the news for fun. This may stem from a feeling that I deserve to be compensated for my hard work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Interestingly, some of my friends with busy schedules tell me that they have a similar pattern at home. In fact, we tend to manage our time more efficiently when we have free time, such as on weekends or holidays. When I have more time that I can control without having to work toward a specific task, I usually find myself looking at a screen or watching TV instead of focusing on reading or working out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By and large, our desires seem to seek fulfillment through a range of behaviors and activities. It is a kind of compensatory psychology. Maslow described a hierarchical structure of needs, and it operates in a highly complicated way. One of the most important points here is that we need room for fun, even when we prioritize the results of our work and performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is why some parents try to teach their children how to spend time on more meaningful extracurricular activities, such as art or exercise. Unfortunately, I don\u2019t have a sophisticated hobby that helps me recharge. Still, it\u2019s never too late to learn something new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Part 2. Proactive Leadership<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recently, I received a report that a project with an affiliate company involved providing our voice-recognition engine. There were several significant issues, ranging from disagreements over the scope of work to a tight delivery schedule. Internally, after fierce discussions, we reached the painful decision to drop the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then, I spoke with my counterpart to communicate our position. Surprisingly, he was flexible enough to accept our proposals, and we reached an agreement to revisit the project with a revised scope of work. After hanging up, I reflected on what I had overlooked and realized that our team had made a mistake. We had tried to persuade them to accept our proposal, and they had pushed back strongly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As far as the project itself was concerned, there had been no notable oversights or mistakes throughout the process. However, there was one critical point I had to think about: my insufficiently active involvement in the project. I was handling key projects at the time and had delegated this one to my colleagues. The main reason for their change in stance was that they had finally discussed the project with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many people live the way they have always lived, and this inertia prevents them from changing their way of thinking. Regardless of working style or way of thinking, every position requires its own skill set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of my friends was not particularly diligent as a junior, but he now outperforms others after being promoted to vice president. What enables him to perform better is that he is well suited to his new position. He is outgoing and enjoys networking events, so he has built a strong professional network. Based on his personal strengths, he is good at creating business opportunities and identifying attractive deals and partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Still, he is not as diligent as some of his peers by the standards of a traditional agrarian or Puritan work ethic. Even so, his unique skill set has made him indispensable to the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are two lessons I need to take from my friend\u2019s case and the project case mentioned above. Above all, I need to be more active and make a greater effort to communicate with potential partners and various stakeholders to move things forward instead of meandering around my desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meeting more people, experiencing new trends, and thinking deeply are three things I need to pursue in addition to the management and leadership skills I am trying to develop. In particular, meeting more people\u2014or at least speaking with them more frequently outside internal meetings\u2014is the first thing I must do.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
