Book Review: Made to Stick

This book, ‘Made to Stick’, explains useful guidelines and detailed examples for making a story more reliable. And the book begins with a bit of a shocking story.

One day, a man woke up in a bath filled with ice. And he found a memo that said he should call 911 and seek medical care. Last night, he drank at a bar and an attractive woman approached him with two drinks. They each had a drink. That’s the last thing he remembered until he woke up. And he realized that his kidney was stolen by someone else.

What do you think about this story? I assure you, you will never forget it once you’ve heard it. You will wonder whether if it is true or fictional. A message should have an impact powerful enough to remain in someone’s memory. For making a message more powerful, several things are required.

Authors of this book define the key guidelines for writing as follows:
Simplicity, Unexpectedness, Concreteness, Credibility, Emotion, Story

Several years ago, I read the book, ‘One Page Proposal’. It coaches the readers on how to write the core message with brevity. After reading the book, I learned how to keep a message simple, but that was all I got out of it. ‘Made to Stick’ gives various methods apart from ‘Simplicity’. And you can easily understand the guidelines and apply these to your report through various examples.

People suggest ideas and deliver opinions. And normally they write the report in their own way whether it is efficient or not. But they should know that there are some shortcuts to get effective result from exercising writing in a well-accepted format.
Even though people say writing skills are unnecessary, they may want to be logical in thinking and expressing their thoughts. So I strongly recommend this book to all those who want to be more logical.
