Like telecommunication industry, telematics market for pedestrians had grown with the basic services such as buddy-finding, simple map service. As this early stage arrives maturity, more specific services appears for fulfilling customers’ needs. One of famous cases are POI(Point of Interest) service. This map-connected service provides nice restaurants or fancy accommodation. A representative service is foursquare.com.
On the other hand, vehicular area has not developed well. After the explosive growth of navigation market, the next step is not that clear. I’m sure that traffic information and high quality map are still effective for telematics. But it’s a kind of additional value. It can’t be a main dish.
When we look into a telecommunication market, we can get a clue expecting next telematics. Through distribution of smartphones, a telecommunication company’s walled garden has been rapidly openned and its network has become dumb pipeline. For avoiding dumb pipeline, a lot of telecommunication companies are trying to break their business model or make new business chances. Anyway wireless internet is openned and traditional internet is widened. In this process, platform players such as mobile operating system provider grabs their business chances.
Vehicles are very various. They have their own brain called ECU(Electronic Control Unit), and they have their own operating system which are connected CAN(Car Area Network). And these protocols are standard, but little bit different between models. Most of all Vehicles are very restricted area. Car makers prefer safety to innovative service. They are very conservative. So when they make their intelligent system, they have adopted linux like QNX. But the vehicular space is rapidly changed like smartphones. Many car makers are testing their innovation like Hyundai motors.
Maybe someday, a car will be computerized and be connected to web with no limiatations. But the platform for vehicle is different with mobile or normal computer platform. A car has complicate signals from each equipments and these information should be effectively monitored. This kind of the control unit and the connecting platform is necessary. A connecting platform includes input platform and output platform. So voice recognition and augmented reality are very prospective in near future. And the connection between vehicles, or between a vehicle and a center(or other objects like sensors) will be more important.
