Next Chance for Samsung Electronics

Recently many people were worried that Samsung may follow the path of Nokia which grew fast and took more than half of the market share. Although the company maintains its number one market share, its market leadership and growth speed has sharply plummeted. Even Nokia couldn’t help giving up Symbian.

Because of these warnings, Samsung has considered various scenarios and tried a lot of test-beds and methods. Bada is one of the most famous examples. And the company also has took part in many kinds of projects including the NFC test-bed which has provided NFC embedded phones to various carriers for the NFC payment and related business.

But many people think the problem of Samsung is that the company is excessively oriented towards hardware. Although performance and speculations of devices may be better than Apple’s, the design and the delicate sensibility fall behind its rivals. Due to continuous threats of Apple and Google, Samsung has focused on how to make an emotional development and competitiveness of platforms.

But I think it would be better for Samsung to deal with its functional enhancement at the same time. A few days ago, when I saw the update of KIES which is the management tool to control and sync data between Samsung’s devices, I was surprised of its improved service quality. Especially I was impressed by ‘All Share’.

‘All Share’ is the function which can support three-screen service based on the protocol of DLNA(Digital Living Network Alliance). Although service feature is similar with ‘Air Play’ of Apple, it gives more than ‘Air Play’. ‘All Share’ enables users to manage folders and files which are saved at a PC directly via a smartphone.

Even though there is a long way for Samsung, the direction may be right. Especially, Samsung has various line-ups of digital devices and living products. And as ‘Cloud Computing’ rises, this approach may be more effective to sustain its growth speed in spite of several disputes over Samsung’s weaknesses.
