I read the article about the growth of Twitter and Zynga. These two articles are separately written by the same writer, Emma Barnett of Telegraph. One interesting point is that they have not commonly defined the long-term goal of the company.
Zynga’s founder, Mark Pincus, doesn’t have any thought to sell the company but only want to go IPO right now. But there is a possibility to sell. He just wanted that Zynga would mean ‘play’ as google means the verb, search.
Twitter’s newly appointed CEO, Dick Costolo, said that he doesn’t know the exact long-term goal, but he knows the specific dream in near future. And cofounder, Williams, replied to the question of success of twitter,
“When twitter reaches its potential, that’s succss. And it’s not done that yet. It will have only done so when billions of people around the world are using Twitter on a daily basis to consume the majority of their information in real time. That’s true success.”
Some big companies try to find the vision and make it in detail with quantitatively. But the companies which are experiencing real success don’t focus on a long-term goal but try to get more realistic objectives such as global expansion and making profits.
Strategically making vision and an action plan are needed. But at the first time, it is not necessary to spend time to set up the plan in detail. Recently when I see the newly succeeding services, it has occured to me that execution is prior to strategy. After getting an enough power, it’s time to think over a detail blue print.
